How to change the speed of a video

Add your video, or up to five at once.
Choose a speed. Under 1x slows it down, over 1x speeds it up.
Keep the sound (it stays at its natural pitch) or remove it.
Press Change the speed and download the result.

What happens to the picture and the sound

The picture is retimed: at 2x each frame is shown for half as long, so the video lasts half the time. The frame rate of the result matches the original, so fast-forward drops frames and slow motion repeats them. Slow motion is therefore not as smooth as footage actually filmed at a high frame rate, and 0.25x of a 30 fps clip looks stepped.

The sound is stretched or squeezed without changing its pitch, using a time-stretching filter. Speech stays clear up to about 2x, and at 3x or 4x it is fast but still recognisable. At 0.25x or 0.5x a voice sounds slow and slightly drawn out, which is unavoidable. For fast-forward clips where the sound would only be noise, choose to remove it.

Limits to know

The result cannot be longer than the maximum duration. A long video can be sped up freely but cannot be slowed down very far.
Slowing a video down makes the file larger, because the same footage lasts longer.
To change the speed of only part of a video, trim the part, change its speed, and rejoin the pieces with Merge videos.

Questions about Change video speed

Will the voice sound like a chipmunk when I speed it up?

No. The pitch is kept, so a voice at 1.5x or 2x sounds quick but natural. Choose “Remove it” if you do not need the sound.

Why is my slow motion not smooth?

Slow motion can only repeat the frames that exist. Footage filmed at 60 or 120 fps slows down smoothly; a 30 fps video at 0.25x looks stepped.

What is the slowest and fastest speed?

From 0.25x (four times slower) to 4x (four times faster). Other speeds are not offered to keep the sound clean.

Does the file get bigger or smaller?

Sped up, it gets smaller since it is shorter. Slowed down, it gets larger since it lasts longer.
