Reverse a video
A clip played backwards turns a dropped glass into a glass that reassembles itself. This tool reverses the picture and the sound together, and gives you a normal MP4 to download.
How to reverse a video
- Add the clip.
- Press Reverse the video.
- Play the result in the preview, then download it.
There is nothing to configure: the whole file is played from the last frame to the first.
What happens to the sound
The audio track is reversed with the picture, so speech plays backwards too. That is what you want for a visual trick; it is rarely what you want for an interview. If the soundtrack gets in the way, remove it first with Remove audio, or lower it with Change video volume, then reverse the silent version.
Why there is a 60-second limit
Reversing is not a filter that works frame by frame as it goes. The clip has to be read entirely before the last frame can be written first, which means holding the whole file in memory. Sixty seconds keeps that affordable on a shared server, and keeps the job fast. For a longer clip, cut the part you need with Trim video and reverse that.
Where it is actually useful
Magic tricks, obviously, but also:
- Reassembling shots — a spill, a collapse, a splash pulling itself back together.
- Comedic intros — a sentence played backwards reads like a strange incantation.
- Checking a movement — a golf swing or a dance step is easier to study backwards.
- Loop bridges — a short reversed shot between two scenes hides a cut.
Quality and format
The video is re-encoded to H.264 in an MP4 container, because the frames have to be rewritten in a new order. Keep the result, not a second reverse of it: doing the operation twice re-encodes twice and costs a little sharpness each time.
What happens to your file
The upload is deleted as soon as the job finishes, and the result within the hour. No account, no watermark, no e-mail needed.
Questions about Reverse a video
Why does it stop at 60 seconds?
The clip must be read entirely before it can be written backwards, so it sits in memory during the job. Sixty seconds is the limit that stays fast and safe on shared hosting. Trim the clip first to reverse a longer video.
Is the sound reversed as well?
Yes, both tracks are reversed together so they stay in sync. Remove the audio first if you only want the picture backwards.
Does reversing twice give me the original file back?
It gives you the same content, but not the same file: each pass re-encodes the picture, so a little detail is lost every time.
Can I reverse only part of a video?
Yes — cut the part out with the trim tool, then reverse that clip. You can then merge the pieces back together.
Which formats can I upload?
MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, MPEG, WMV, 3GP, OGV and FLV, within the size and length limits shown above the drop zone.
