Check a video’s details
Find out exactly what is inside a video file: codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and audio. Useful before converting, uploading or editing.
How to read a video’s metadata
- Add a video.
- Press Read metadata. The file is analysed with FFprobe and the details appear in the viewer.
The upload is deleted as soon as it has been read. Nothing is processed or stored.
What the fields mean
- Container
- The file format, such as MP4 or Matroska (MKV/WebM). It decides which players can open the file.
- Video codec
- How the picture is compressed. H.264 plays everywhere; HEVC (H.265) is more efficient but not supported by every browser; VP9 and AV1 are common on the web.
- Resolution
- Width × height in pixels as the video is displayed, after any rotation flag is applied.
- Frame rate
- Frames per second. 24–30 is typical; 60 is common for gaming and sport.
- Bitrate
- Data per second, averaged over the whole file. It is the best single predictor of file size: size ≈ bitrate × duration.
- Rotation flag
- An instruction to players to turn the picture. Phones use it instead of rotating pixels; some apps ignore it, which is why a video can appear sideways.
- Pixel format
- How colour is stored.
yuv420pis the most compatible; 10-bit formats likeyuv420p10lecome from HDR recordings.
Questions about Metadata viewer
Is my file stored?
No. It is read with FFprobe and deleted in the same request.
Why does the bitrate differ from my camera’s setting?
Cameras usually vary the bitrate from moment to moment. The figure shown is the average over the whole file, including audio.
Can I see GPS location or camera model?
Not currently. The viewer focuses on technical stream details.
