Remove metadata from a video
Videos often carry hidden tags: where they were filmed, which phone was used, when. Strip them before you post or send a file, without re-encoding the picture.
How to remove video metadata
- Add your video, or up to five at once.
- Press Remove the metadata.
- The result screen shows how many tags the original had and how many are left. Download the clean copy.
What is hidden in a video file
Besides picture and sound, a video file stores a block of descriptive tags. Depending on the device and app, they can include:
- GPS location of where the video was recorded, sometimes precise to a few metres.
- The device: manufacturer, model and the software version.
- Dates: when it was created and last modified.
- Editing traces: the app that exported it, a title, comments, chapters.
Many social platforms remove these on upload, but not all of them, and files sent by email, chat as a document, or from a download link usually keep everything.
What this tool does and does not remove
The picture and sound are copied as they are into a new file with every tag left out, so nothing is re-encoded. A few technical fields have to stay for the file to play, such as the codec and the frame rate. The result screen counts the tags it found and the tags that remain, so you can see the difference rather than take it on trust.
It cannot remove what is in the picture or the sound: a street sign, a face, a voice. And it does not hide that a file was converted by this site. To see exactly what a file contains first, open the metadata viewer.
Questions about Remove video metadata
Does removing metadata change how the video looks?
No. Picture and sound are copied without re-encoding in nearly all cases, so quality is identical. The video still plays the right way up, because rotation is kept.
Does it remove the GPS location?
Yes. Location tags are removed, and the result screen tells you if the original had one.
Why do some tags remain?
A few fields describe the file’s structure (codec, frame rate, handler names) and are needed for playback. They say nothing about you or where it was filmed.
Is my video stored?
No. It is deleted when the job ends and the result is deleted within the hour. See the privacy policy.
