How to grab a frame

  1. Add your video and pause the preview on the moment you want.
  2. Press Use playhead, or type the time.
  3. Choose JPG or PNG and a size, then press Save frame.

JPG or PNG?

JPG gives a small file that looks the same to the eye. It is the right choice for thumbnails and web pages. PNG is lossless, so it is several times larger, but it is better when you will edit the image further or need crisp text and edges, like a screenshot of a slide.

A frame is never sharper than the video it comes from. Motion blur and compression in the source carry over to the still. If a moment looks soft, try a frame a fraction of a second earlier or later, when the movement pauses.

Need many frames at once? Use Video to images to export a series as a ZIP.

Questions about Thumbnail maker

What resolution is the image?

With “Original size” the image has the same resolution as the video, for example 1920 × 1080 for a 1080p video.

Can I get the exact frame I paused on?

Yes. The time from the playhead is sent with millisecond precision, and the frame at that time is decoded.

Why does the preview not play?

Some formats, like MKV or AVI, may not play in your browser. You can still type the time; the server reads every supported format.
