Crop a video

Cut away the edges of the frame. Reframe a landscape video as a square or vertical clip, remove black bars, or crop to an exact pixel area.

Files are deleted automatically after 60 minutes.

Frame

Preset frames are taken from the centre of the picture.

How to crop a video

  1. Add your video. The viewer shows its dimensions, for example 1920 × 1080.
  2. Choose a frame shape. Presets take the largest possible area from the centre of the picture.
  3. For a specific area choose Custom and enter the width and height to keep, plus how far from the left and top edges the area starts.
  4. Press Crop video and download the result.

Cropping versus resizing

Cropping removes part of the picture; resizing keeps the whole picture and changes how many pixels describe it. To turn a 16:9 landscape clip into a 9:16 vertical video without black bars, you must crop: a 1920 × 1080 video cropped to 9:16 keeps a 606 × 1080 strip from the middle. Follow up with the resizer if a platform wants a particular resolution.

Working out a custom crop

Coordinates start at the top-left corner of the frame. To remove 140-pixel black bars from the top and bottom of a 1920 × 1080 video, keep width 1920 and height 800, with a left offset of 0 and a top offset of 140. The crop area must stay inside the frame. If it doesn’t, the tool tells you before anything is processed. Sizes are rounded down to even numbers for compatibility.

Questions about Crop video

Can I choose which part of the frame to keep?

With presets, the crop is always centred. Use “Custom” to place the crop area anywhere by setting the left and top offsets.

How do I crop a video for Instagram or TikTok?

Use 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, 4:5 for portrait feed posts, or 1:1 for square posts. The social media size guide lists the details.

Does cropping lower the quality?

Cropping keeps the original pixels in the area you choose, and the video is re-encoded at high quality. It does lower the resolution, because the edges are gone.

My phone video is sideways after cropping.

Fix the orientation first with Rotate and flip, then crop.
