Split a video into parts
Cut a long video into equal-length clips, for example one-minute parts for a story or chat. All the parts arrive together in one ZIP.
How to split a video
- Add your video.
- Choose how long each part should be.
- Choose Fast or Exact, press Split the video, and download the ZIP.
The parts are named part-001, part-002 and so on, in order. The last one is shorter when the video does not divide evenly.
Fast or exact?
Compressed video only stores a full picture now and then, at a keyframe. A cut without re-encoding can only start on one of them:
- Fast copies the video as it is. It takes seconds and loses no quality, but each cut lands on the keyframe nearest the time you chose, so parts can differ by a second or two from the length you picked. A video with very few keyframes cannot be split this way, and the tool tells you to choose Exact.
- Exact re-encodes the video and forces a keyframe at every cut, so every part has the length you chose. It takes longer, roughly the time of a normal conversion.
Good uses
- Cutting a long recording into one-minute clips for stories or a messaging app that limits the length.
- Breaking a lecture or a screen recording into sections that are easier to share.
- Getting files small enough to send one by one. For a size limit rather than a length limit, use Compress video to a size.
Questions about Split a video
How many parts can I make?
Up to 30. If your video would make more, choose a longer part length. If it is shorter than one part, there is nothing to split.
Why are my parts not exactly the length I chose?
You probably used Fast, which cuts on keyframes. Choose Exact for parts of the exact length.
Can I choose where to cut?
This tool cuts at equal intervals. To choose specific moments use Trim video for each part.
How do I join the parts again?
Use Merge videos, which accepts up to five clips at a time.
